Stagflation* is a simple idea with ugly market consequences: the economy slows, but prices don’t cooperate. Think of it like driving with one foot on the brake and the other on the gas. You still burn fuel, but you don’t go anywhere quickly—and you wear out the car.

Why it’s on the radar now: the latest jobs data showed the labor market losing altitude, while energy prices have been jolted by fresh geopolitical risk. When oil jumps, it can seep into everyday costs (shipping, utilities, travel). And when hiring cools at the same time, households and businesses get less willing to spend. That’s how you can end up with “demand getting weaker” and “prices still annoying” in the same sentence.

What makes this week important, is the sequencing. Wednesday’s CPI* is the cleanest “temperature check” on consumer inflation. Then Friday is a data dump: Personal Income and Outlays (which includes the PCE price index*), the updated GDP* read for Q4 2025, and durable goods orders. If inflation prints firm while growth and spending look softer, the market may lean back into stagflation talk. If inflation cools and activity steadies, the worry can fade just as quickly.

Bottom line: this is less about one headline and more about a pattern. Watch inflation, watch growth, and keep an eye on energy. When those three disagree, markets tend to argue loudly.
